Are you interested in history — especially the colonial era and Sanford’s local heritage? The Sweat-Morin Homestead is looking for volunteers to help showcase this important historic property and assist with our educational programs. You may already be familiar with the Homestead, but if not, we encourage you to visit our website to learn more about this remarkable piece of Sanford’s past.
In July of 2025, we celebrated the grand opening of the Homestead. Following the opening, we welcomed many visitors for Saturday tours through October. Although the Homestead is currently closed for the winter, we anticipate reopening in April of 2026. Our hope is to expand visiting hours this season — and to do that, we need more volunteers.
In addition to tours, last year we offered several well-attended programs highlighting colonial life, including a dame school, hearth cooking demonstrations, a harvest day celebration, and a tavern night. These programs were both educational and fun, and we are planning even more events for the coming season. Volunteers play an essential role in making these programs successful.
Prior experience is not required. Sweat-Morin Homestead provides training and written materials to help our volunteers feel confident leading tours and sharing the story of the Homestead with visitors.
No matter your background or "comfort zone," we’re excited to help you find the perfect spot for your passions to shine. Whether you’re eager to get your hands in the soil or you prefer the quiet thrill of a genealogical discovery, volunteer opportunities at the Sweat-Morin Homestead offer you a way to connect deeply with both the land and its history.
Every need listed below is a vital piece of the puzzle in keeping our community’s heritage alive:
Tour Guides
Program and Event Management
Geneological Research: Investigating descendants of Rev. Moses Sweat
Plowing and Soil Preparation
Planting: Trees, bushes, hay, vegetables, herbs, and flowers
Fencing for Varmint Control
Garden Maintenance: Watering, weeding, and harvesting
Building Maintenance: Helping preserve and repair our physical structures
Property Maintenance: Tree cutting/removal and invasive control
Photography: Help chronicle our story in pictures
Preserving and sharing our heritage is critically important. Too few people today have a real sense of what life was like in rural Maine during the late 18th century. The Sweat-Morin Homestead offers visitors an opportunity to step back in time and experience a recreation of 18th century life in rural Maine. We would truly love your help in bringing this history to life.
